The State of Delaware and Enstructure recently announced a public-private partnership to build the new Edgemoor container port on the Delaware River. The $635 million development aims to expand the state’s port capacity and stimulate economic growth.
The new “Port Delaware” project will transform a former DuPont titanium dioxide manufacturing site into a state-of-the-art container facility at Edgemoor (Port Delaware North), which will be integrated with the existing Port of Wilmington (Port Delaware South). When complete, the combined Port Delaware will quadruple container cargo capacity and reduce ship voyage time, ensuring the long-term success of Delaware’s maritime industry. Construction will take place in three phases.
The project is expected to create nearly 6,000 new jobs initially, with over 3,100 direct positions. The construction phase alone will generate 3,900 jobs and $42.3 million in tax revenues. Once complete, Port Delaware will support about 11,480 jobs and contribute $76.2 million annually in state tax revenues.
The project also boasts significant environmental and community benefits due to its climate-resilient design and its location in a historically disadvantaged area and designated opportunity zone.
“Helping legacy owners of complex properties attract fantastic uses like this is Vita Nuova’s forte. We thank Chemours for having the confidence to give us the opportunity to support the redevelopment of this site,” said Michael Taylor, President of Vita Nuova.
Port Delaware signifies a major investment in Delaware’s future, promising job creation, economic growth, and enhanced port capabilities in the state and the Eastern seaboard. It also highlights the importance and power of public-private partnerships in addressing critical development and infrastructure needs.
