In September 2016, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a Record of Decision for a portion of the Raymark Industries, Inc. Superfund site in Stratford, Connecticut. It included remedies for several areas of the site, including Upper Ferry Creek (OU3), the former Raybestos Memorial Field (OU4), remaining additional properties (OU6), and required the installation of soil vapor mitigation systems in several homes and commercial buildings. On June 16, 2026, EPA held an open house to allow community members to walk on the 14-acre parcel of the former Raybestos Memorial Field (OU4), where remediation and remedy construction is now complete.
The key to the successful cleanup was the development of a repository for asbestos-laden soils at the former Raybestos Brakettes softball field behind the local Home Depot and adjacent to a residential neighborhood. After traditional mediation failed to reach agreement with the community, Vita Nuova was asked to look at how the site might create benefits for the town and mitigate impacts to the neighborhood. Vita Nuova conducted significant stakeholder outreach including interviewing residents in their homes and working closely with town administration. Above are renderings presented to the town which led to agreement to move forward with the remedy. The site is now ready and safe for commercial redevelopment.
