In September 2016, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued a Record of Decision for a portion of the Raymark Industries, Inc. Superfund Site. It includes remedies for Upper Ferry Creek (OU3), the former Raybestos Memorial Field (OU4), remaining additional properties (OU6), and involves the installation of soil vapor mitigation systems in several homes and commercial buildings. View the Record of Decision here. On June 16, 2026, EPA held an open house to allow community members to walk on the now-completed former Raybestos Memorial Field (OU4).
The key to the cleanup was the development of a repository for asbestos-laden soils at the former “brakettes” softball field behind the Home Depot and adjacent to a residential neighorhood. After traditional mediation failed to reach agreement with the community, Vita Nuova was asked to look at how the site might create benefits for the town and mitigate impacts to the neighborhood. Vita Nuova conducted significant stakeholder outreach including interviewing residents in their homes and working closely with town administration. Above are renderings presented to the town which led to agreement to move forward with the remedy.
